Cresson

Bridge along the main line canal greenway

Cresson makes a great base for exploring the feats of engineering used to make the Main Line Canal and later, the railroad possible. Nearby, the Allegheny Portage Railroad shuttled Main Line Canal passengers and freight across the Allegheny Mountains. In the 1850’s, the Pennsylvania Railroad built the Horseshoe Curve and Gallitzin Tunnels, still used today to bridge the Allegheny Ridge.
